Charles Leclerc has received an unusual honor: He will be able to run with the Olympic flame, which will soon arrive in Monaco, so he can contribute to the journey that the traditional flame will take from Greece to France on a short stretch.
The Paris Summer Olympics will start in just over a month, on July 26, but the Olympic flame that represents its ideals is already on French soil and will arrive in Monaco tomorrow. And who else would take the first meters with it if not Charles Leclerc, the city-state's most famous athlete!? The pride of Scuderia Ferrari will carry the torch at exactly 2:15 p.m., before passing it on to skier Alexandra Coletti, table tennis player Xiaoxin Yang, and bobsledder Rudy Rinaldi.
"We still get goosebumps when we think about Charles' historic victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, and now here's another incredible milestone, our Formula 1 driver has the honor of carrying the Olympic flame through our streets tomorrow," Radio Monaco reported on the special news.
The rarity of an athlete representing a non-Olympic sport taking part in this ceremony is demonstrated by the fact that no one else has been given the honour, apart from Lewis Hamilton, who was asked to be the “guardian of the flame” ahead of the London Games in 2012.
