Helmut Marko has come clean about why they need Liam Lawson. Well, nothing more than a solid second driver whose job will be to be the first to lose...
Well, anyone who thought Lawson was a fool with the Red Bull Racing seat should read the following lines:
"Despite his limited F1 experience, Liam Lawson was the mentally strongest of our junior drivers. No one can beat Max Verstappen, it's a heavy burden and you have to be able to accept that. Lawson is capable of that, and he has a lot of potential for development. If we compare him to Yuki Tsunoda, Yuki is clearly a faster driver, but he lacks the aforementioned things. He makes unnecessary mistakes and accidents, has difficulty controlling his temper, and traditionally "slows down" in such situations. And with these factors, you start with an even greater handicap in a team where the current world champion is on the other side of the pits.
"This would have been too much for Tsunoda, he would not have been able to process on an emotional level that he would be at a disadvantage, that he could not win. We expect Lawson to be within three tenths of Verstappen in both qualifying and the races. According to our calculations, this will be enough to collect a sufficient number of points in the constructors' championship. We expect him to continuously improve according to his abilities," Marko clarified Liam Lawson's place within the Red Bull stable.
