Carlos Sainz's former race engineer shared an interesting idea the other day. Tom Stallard - who currently works with Oscar Piastri - believes that the McLaren team can look competitive because of the Spaniard's work, and they wouldn't be here without him.
However, according to Stallard, Sainz also benefited a lot from those times, and that's how he was able to join Scuderia Ferrari:
"He is a brilliant driver who has clearly helped make McLaren competitive. Although he was not seen as a real asset at Renault, he showed us what potential he had, we needed his services a lot. He has contributed a lot to our project, we would not be here if he had not been with us at that time. And we helped him to restore his self-esteem, thanks to which he is now considered one of the absolute best drivers.
"Now he is having the same beneficial effect at Ferrari that he had with us, he has a huge role in the Reds being in the fight for the Constructors' World Championship." - came the unexpected, yet huge praise from his opponent.
