One of Mercedes' most respected engineers spoke to the New York Times about how the seven-time world champion became so successful.
According to Andrew Shovlin, the key factor in this was not work ethic, obsession, or the desire to improve, but rather a morbid phobia of defeat!
"I don't think there's another driver like him. He has a completely unique mindset, I really enjoyed working with him. He's extremely committed to success and demands the same from everyone else. But what really made him great, what's really his superpower, is his almost pathological phobia of losing. He hates it so much, so he does everything, constantly influences those around him, to avoid it. I don't know any other driver who has this attitude so strongly. Obviously, they all hate losing, but the anxiety they feel about it and the desire to do anything to prevent it puts Lewis Hamilton high above the rest," Shovlin said approvingly of their former driver.
