Recently, Jacques Villeneuve made a cruel comment about Daniel Ricciardo, saying he had no business in F1 anymore. Now Martin Brundle has not defended him either.
Ricciardo made a name for himself with great results at Red Bull Racing, but since then he has been slowly but steadily falling into the swamp of mediocrity, or rather below it. Martin Brundle drew attention to this in a more subtle style than Villeneuve:
"My colleague Jacques Villeneuve made a very harsh opinion about him, which has since become a scandal. Jacques didn't say anything bad, he just put it strongly. I basically look up to all F1 drivers, so I have a lot of respect for Daniel Ricciardo. They control terrible, difficult-to-drive cars, and there's a lot of attention and pressure on them. Daniel has great results, he's won eight races, won in Monaco, and has been on the podium 32 times, which has definitely made him a part of the history of the sport. He started out as a world-class driver, but those results happened a long time ago, and since he left Red Bull Racing, he's just been looking for himself."
"Since then he has lost the flow that makes someone a world champion aspirant, and he is no longer the same rider he was... And I fear that will never change," said Brundle, who in his own style described the Australian's problem perfectly.
