According to international press reports, FOM is seriously considering changing the current Formula 1 points system. The teams are also supporting the change without exception.
There are plans to change the points system, but before anyone thinks about drastic changes, they would not interfere with the way things are done so far. It would just mean that teams outside the top 10 could also earn points. Instead of the top 10, the top 12 would get points, and it would look like there would only be a quantitative difference from 7th place down. The seventh-placed driver would still get six points, and this number would decrease one by one, all the way down to 12th, which would be worth one point.
For this amendment to come into effect next season, a simple majority will be enough at the F1 committee meeting. If ten teams confirm this, and if it receives support from the FIA and FOM, then we will be running with this method for 2025. It seems that there will be no problem with the support, the majority of team bosses only see advantages in this new, planned system:
"There are two different championships within F1 these days, as we fight for positions 1-5, and there is an equally fierce fight for positions 6-10. I think this is something where we can safely believe the statistics. We have to look at the numbers, the analyses, and ask ourselves what would help if we changed the current points system, what would be the impact on the field. I am impartial on the subject, and the others are not negative either, in fact, most of them will support the change!" - said Christian Horner, who said that to his knowledge Frederic Vasseur, Laurent Mekies and Ayao Komatsu will definitely vote for the new points system. Decision soon!
