After Sergio Perez was sacked, as expected, his successor was named within a day. And it's none other than Liam Lawson. Christian Horner has revealed what decided his decision over Yuki Tsunoda.
The difference was very minimal, the decision was very close, and in the end Lawson finished first due to his better race pace:
“It was a very close decision because Yuki is a very fast driver. He has many seasons of experience, he performed exceptionally well in the tyre test in Abu Dhabi, the engineers still praise what they saw there. But when we compared his data with Liam, we saw that his data was better than Tsunoda's, especially in terms of race pace. Their qualifying results are almost the same, but you can't deny the fact that Lawson only has 11 races left, he will definitely get much better and stronger with time.
"He's mentally strong, he's got a lot of stamina, but the most important thing is not to put too much pressure on him. He's going up against the best driver of his generation, but he's best off completely ignoring what's happening with Max Verstappen and just focusing on his own task and his own development. If he does that, he'll be fine!" said Christian Horner.
