Lewis Hamilton recently explained in a lengthy interview why he is leaving Mercedes. Even he might not believe what he is saying.
The Briton's stated intention (was) to leave the German team after a successful season behind him. It increasingly looks like the chances of that are converging towards zero.
"I really want it, I really want it, and it hurts even more that it won't happen. Everyone at the team is working really hard, fighting to make this a great season. They have a lot of work to do, both the factory workers and the trackside staff."
For me, this is a journey that is incredibly emotional. I really love this team, the guys, and my departure has nothing to do with it, and it is not true that I am unhappy here. The relationship between us has not deteriorated, Mercedes has been with me since I was 13 years old, which I can never forget for them. I love this brand, I love these people, they have been with me in good times and bad, almost my entire career. It is a strange situation for me now, as well as the fact that we are not where we should be and where we should be. I enjoy gaining a lot of experience in situations that I have not been in before, but three years without success is a lot of time, now we could finally get back on the right track,” reflected Lewis Hamilton.
